Celine Dion experiences seizure in her ongoing struggle with stiff person syndrome

Celine Dion experienced a frightening seizure captured on camera during the filming of her new documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion,” all while contending with Stiff Person Syndrome. The 56-year-old singer was undergoing a medical evaluation when she suddenly exhibited seizure-like symptoms while lying on an examination bed. Witnesses observed her in a rigid posture, visibly distressed, and audibly groaning in discomfort.

Terrill Lobo, a sports medicine therapist, explained, “Part of the disease is that as soon as you go into a contraction, sometimes … the signal to release it doesn’t understand, so it ends up just staying in a contracted position.” The footage showed Celine being assisted by medical personnel, later revealing tearfully her embarrassment and emotional turmoil over the incident.

Reflecting on the harrowing moment, Celine expressed, “I don’t know how to express it, like, it’s just … you know, like, to not have control of yourself?” She also voiced concerns about her ability to perform, questioning, “Well, what am I gonna do?… If I can’t get stimulated by what I love, and then I’m gonna go onstage and, like, you’re gonna put the pulse oximeter on me and you’re gonna turn me on my back?”

In December 2022, Celine publicly disclosed her diagnosis with a rare neurological disorder, and since then has been outspoken about her condition, using her platform to raise awareness. Her documentary offers an intimate glimpse into her daily struggles, where she shared, “It’s not hard to do a show, you know? It’s hard to cancel a show… I’m working hard every day but I have to admit, it’s been a struggle. I miss it so much, the people, I miss them. If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop.”

Despite the challenges posed by her health, Celine Dion remains resilient and determined to continue her journey, buoyed by support from her medical team and loved ones.
