BAZ prohibits prophets from TV and radio broadcasts

In a move aimed at protecting the public, the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has announced a ban on the broadcasting of advertisements for prophets, traditional healers, and traditional herbs. The directive was issued by BAZ Chief Executive Tandai Kapumha, who emphasized the importance of safeguarding consumers from potentially misleading content.

The new regulation, communicated through a formal letter, instructs all broadcasters to immediately cease airing advertisements related to self-styled prophets, traditional healers, and any claims of traditional medicine that lack proper authentication. Kapumha highlighted that such advertisements often mislead the public, potentially causing harm by promoting unverified and sometimes dangerous remedies.

“Considering the authority’s mandate to protect the interests of consumers, and in alignment with section 23(a) and (b) of the Broadcasting and Services (Code of Conduct for Broadcasters) Regulations, 2023, as well as section 27(4)(e) of the Broadcasting Services (Licensing and Content) Regulations 2004, all broadcasters are directed to discontinue the broadcasting of such content,” Kapumha stated.

The decision comes in response to a growing trend of self-styled prophets and traditional healers using radio and television platforms to advertise their purported abilities, including miracle performances and cures for chronic diseases. Reports have emerged of individuals being advised to forgo conventional medical treatments in favor of these unverified remedies, leading to serious health consequences and even deaths.

The BAZ’s new directive reflects a broader effort to prevent the public from falling victim to potentially harmful and unsubstantiated claims. The ban is expected to impact a range of media content, aiming to ensure that broadcasters adhere to standards that prioritize consumer safety and accurate information.
