Exiled Zimbabwean music legend Thomas Mapfumo has reported to Nehanda Radio that his home in Domboshava was deliberately set on fire by suspected Zanu PF thugs on Monday. A video of the blaze, featuring commentary from the bystander who filmed it, has since gone viral on social media.
Mapfumo, known for his staunch criticism of the Zimbabwean government, expressed his disbelief over the incident, noting that he has owned the property for over 20 years, coinciding with his period of exile in the United States. “That house can’t have caught fire in the manner it did. There was no grass in the area around the house, so those trying to blame a veld fire are not telling the truth,” he stated.
He elaborated, “In between where they claim the fire started and my house, there are other properties. Why would the fire head straight to my home?” Mapfumo believes that the fire was intentionally set, with the surrounding grass ignited to create a diversion. His relatives on the ground have reported that a group of Zanu PF members threatened locals at nearby shops prior to the attack. The home had been occupied by tenants, but they were recently asked to leave for roof repairs. Looking ahead, Mapfumo shared plans to transform the damaged property into an arts center, discussing this initiative with his children. He indicated that further details on the project and how the community can support it will be released soon.
