Dexter Nduna, a former legislator and controversial figure within Zimbabwe’s Zanu PF party, was remanded in custody on Saturday following his arrest for allegedly collecting parking fees illegally in Chegutu. Nduna, who represented the Chegutu West constituency, faced fraud charges in a magistrate court in the small town.
The state, represented by Tafadzwa Vhore, outlined that Nduna misled motorists by asserting that “Team Chapter,” a company linked to him, had been authorized to collect vehicle parking fees on behalf of the Chegutu municipality. Vhore emphasized that Nduna’s actions amounted to a deliberate misrepresentation designed to defraud unsuspecting motorists. “The accused person made a representation to cause… to act upon the misrepresentation to his prejudice by telling him false demands on behalf of Chegutu municipality claiming that he wanted cash for parking,” Vhore stated during the proceedings.
Unite Saizi defended Nduna from Saizi Law Chambers, but the court has postponed a decision regarding bail until Tuesday, leaving the former MP in custody for the time being. This incident follows previous allegations against Nduna, including accusations of scamming unemployed youths by demanding various fees under the pretenses of providing training and recruitment as vehicle parking marshals. Such actions have painted a picture of a politician willing to engage in dubious schemes to fulfill his ambitions.
Nduna’s controversial reputation has not been limited to these latest allegations. He recently made headlines for his unconventional appearance at a University of Zimbabwe graduation ceremony. Clad in graduation regalia, he attempted to partake in the capping ceremony despite reportedly failing several modules in his pursuit of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
In 2018, Nduna was sworn into parliament, enjoying all the privileges of an elected official, even after official results indicated that he had lost to his opposition challenger, Gift Konjana. This further complicates his already contentious political career and raises questions about his integrity and motives. As the legal proceedings continue, many are left to ponder the implications of Nduna’s actions on the reputation of Zanu PF and the broader political landscape in Zimbabwe.
