An abusive father has been arrested following the circulation of a distressing video in which he is seen violently assaulting a young boy. The incident reportedly stemmed from the child being punished for “taking too long when assigned duties.” In the alarming footage, the boy is seen desperately running for cover as his father grabs various objects, including bricks and a wire, to strike him. Disturbingly, a woman in the video, presumably a family member, walks around the yard seemingly indifferent to the abuse taking place.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the Public Service Ministry responded swiftly to the situation, leading to the man’s arrest on Tuesday. A public notice confirmed that the child was immediately rescued from the abusive environment and placed in a safe location, by Section 14 of the Children’s Act (Chapter 5:06).
Upon removal, the child was provided with a comprehensive package of therapeutic services designed to restore his physical, psychological, and social well-being. In their statement, the ministry condemned the use of violence as a disciplinary method, urging families and communities to adopt positive discipline practices that do not inflict physical, emotional, or psychological harm on children. They emphasized the importance of reporting any cases of child abuse to the Department of Social Development, the ZRP, or community childcare workers.
The ministry’s notice highlights the need for collective action to protect vulnerable children and foster environments where positive, non-violent disciplinary methods are prioritized. The legal proceedings against the father are expected to follow, as authorities work to ensure justice for the young victim.
