In response to the uproar, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung issued a statement to TMZ, saying, “The President and First Lady honored the life and service of Pope Francis, and anyone trying to distract from that should be ashamed of themselves.”
Despite the controversy, President Donald Trump and the First Lady’s presence at the funeral was seen by many as a gesture of respect toward the late pontiff and the Catholic community worldwide.
