Starlink Internet -In a heartfelt gesture of giving back, two former students of Magwegwe Secondary School, Dumisani Gumpo and Mthobie Ndlovu, have donated a Starlink internet kit to their former school. The donation, made on Monday, 23 June, is aimed at helping current learners access modern technology and digital learning platforms, aligning the school with global educational trends.
Gumpo and Ndlovu, who were part of the school’s pioneering class between 1982 and 1985, said the donation was motivated by a desire to contribute meaningfully to the development of future generations. The handover ceremony was attended by teachers, students, and school officials who praised the alumni for their forward-thinking initiative.
Speaking at the event, Ndlovu emphasized the importance of former students playing a role in the advancement of their former schools. “We felt inspired to do something for this school whose opening we pioneered. We believe this donation will put the school on the world stage and ensure that today’s students become part of a technologically empowered generation,” he said.
The Starlink kit, developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, provides high-speed satellite internet access, particularly useful in regions with limited connectivity infrastructure. For Magwegwe Secondary School, this means learners and teachers will now have the ability to access a wide range of educational resources, digital tools, and online learning portals previously out of reach.
“This is our first donation of a Starlink kit to the school,” Ndlovu explained. “But we’ve previously contributed in other ways, including funding and providing prizes for students during the school’s prize-giving ceremonies. This is simply the beginning of what we hope will be a broader initiative.”
Looking ahead, the pair expressed ambitions to do more for the school, particularly in introducing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. “Funds permitting, and with more of the pioneering students coming on board, we hope to introduce AI tools and robotics to the school. That’s the level of technological development seen in developed countries, and our learners should not be left behind,” Ndlovu said.

He also highlighted the potential long-term impact of the internet donation, stating that improved access to technology would open up learning opportunities not only for students but also for teachers. “We believe the children will benefit immensely as a result of this Starlink donation. Important learning portals will now be easily accessible, which is a major plus for both learners and educators. Technology, as we all know, is the way forward.”
By making such contributions, Gumpo and Ndlovu hope to complement government efforts to modernize classrooms and equip Zimbabwean students with the tools to thrive in a competitive global environment. “In our own small way, we hope to support the Government’s vision of transforming education and ushering in modern classroom environments. It’s about giving our students the chance to compete with their peers around the world,” he said.
Ndlovu also took a moment to reflect on the impact the school had on their lives and careers. “To the community, we want to say: our humble beginnings started at Magwegwe Secondary. This school shaped us, inspired many of us, and gave us a solid foundation. We are living proof that great things can come from this place.”
The two former students expressed hope that their gesture would inspire others to follow suit and join hands in uplifting the school and the broader community. “We believe that by working together, we can uplift each other and shape the future for generations to come. It starts with a simple step—giving back to where it all began,” Ndlovu added.
Teachers and school officials expressed their gratitude, noting that the Starlink installation would revolutionize how lessons are delivered and how students engage with the world of information. As the digital divide continues to challenge schools across the country, initiatives like this one stand out as powerful examples of how community and alumni involvement can bring lasting change.
