Former Warriors striker Shingi Kawondera has found himself at the center of controversy after making a string of sensational claims against his ex-wife, Marry Mubaiwa, during a recent podcast interview. In response, Marry Mubaiwa has strongly dismissed the accusations, branding them as false and attention-seeking, and has publicly challenged him to provide evidence or face her in a public debate.
During the interview, Kawondera accused Marry Mubaiwa of contributing to the collapse of his football career and alleged that she played a role in him losing his wealth, particularly his supposed stake in Pioneer Gas. He claimed that the company was taken from him through forgery and implicated the late businessman and socialite Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure in the alleged scheme. Kawondera also asserted that it was through him that Mubaiwa and Ginimbi first met.
“Before I introduced them, they didn’t even know each other… They only got to know each other through me,” Kawondera said in Shona, implying that he was the one who initiated their connection.
Reacting to these statements in an interview with journalist Simba Chikanza on ZimEye.com, Mubaiwa scoffed at the allegations and expressed disbelief over what she described as a gross distortion of facts. She pointed out that she and Ginimbi were not strangers and had known each other for years due to family ties.“How could I not have known Genius?” she asked. “His mother is my father’s sister. So what is he saying? We weren’t strangers from a bottle store. Genius and I were family.”
Mubaiwa also denied claims that she and Ginimbi ran a boutique together in Eastlea. Instead, she clarified that she owned a travel agency named La Shell, which she had established in memory of her late sister Michelle.“La Shell was my company, and it was a travel and tour agency—not a boutique. Everyone knows that. I started it to honor my sister,” she explained. She went on to question Kawondera’s motivations for singling her out among his past relationships, suggesting that he may be trying to remain relevant by dragging her name into controversy.
“He’s been married before and after me. Why is it only me he keeps talking about?” Marry Mubaiwa asked. “Is he looking for attention? For relevance?”On the issue of allegedly ending Kawondera’s football career, Marry Mubaiwa vehemently denied having any influence over his professional decisions.
Marry Mubaiwa Dismisses Shingi Kawondera’s Allegations, Challenges Him to Prove Claims
“How did I end his football career?” she asked. “Was I involved in his training? Was I his coach or manager? If he returned from Cyprus and I wasn’t there, how is that the end of his career?”
More serious were the accusations regarding forgery and the alleged theft of Kawondera’s share in Pioneer Gas. Marry Mubaiwa dismissed the claims as baseless and challenged Kawondera to take his grievances to court rather than making public accusations without evidence.“If he genuinely believes a crime was committed, he should take legal action. Go to the courts,” she urged. “Some of Genius’s properties still exist. If he believes he has a stake, he can approach the estate and make a formal claim.”
She also questioned the legal credibility of the forgery allegations, pointing out that all company changes must be documented and approved through the Registrar of Companies.“If his signature was forged, where is the evidence?” she asked. “That would mean accusing the Registrar of fraud too.”
When asked whether she would be willing to face Kawondera in a public debate over the matter, Mubaiwa responded without hesitation.“Let him come. I’ll face him,” she declared confidently.
Despite the tension between the two, Mubaiwa acknowledged and appreciated Kawondera’s comments praising her parenting, especially his admission that she raised their daughter well and never denied him access.“To be fair, he said I raised our daughter well, and I thank him for that,” she said.
As of now, Kawondera has yet to respond to Mubaiwa’s challenge for a public debate, leaving the ball in his court. The public awaits his next move amid growing scrutiny over the authenticity of his claims and the potential legal implications if proven false.
