Truck Overturns Close to Spot Where Talent Chiwenga Claimed ED Tried to Kill Him

CHIVHU – A haulage truck transporting a consignment of oranges to Harare overturned early Monday morning just before Featherstone in Chivhu, along the busy Masvingo-Harare highway. According to state-owned newspaper The Herald, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.

While the truck crash appears to be an ordinary traffic mishap, its location has reignited public attention due to its proximity to the spot where controversial preacher Talent Chiwenga claims his wife was assassinated in 2019 — a claim he has long tied to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

The overturned truck, which lay sprawled across one side of the highway with oranges scattered along the tarmac, caused a temporary traffic slowdown as authorities moved to clear the road. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle veered off the road and overturned near a bend just outside Featherstone, a stretch notorious for high-speed travel and frequent accidents.

Truck Overturns Near Chivhu Spot Where Talent Chiwenga Once Accused President Mnangagwa of Orchestrating Wife’s Death

Though police had not released an official cause of the crash at the time of publishing, preliminary indications suggest the driver may have lost control, possibly due to speeding or load imbalance. This stretch of the Masvingo-Harare highway is often described as one of the country’s most dangerous roads, with sharp curves, heavy traffic, and frequent haulage activity making it prone to accidents.

But what would have been a routine traffic update has taken on a deeper dimension for followers of Talent Chiwenga, a self-styled prosperity preacher and political commentator who has consistently accused the state of attempting to silence him. Chiwenga lost his wife and two others in a horrific crash on this very stretch of road in June 2019 — an event he maintains was not an accident but an assassination attempt orchestrated by the state.

Chiwenga has alleged that he was being followed on the day of the crash and that his vehicle was intentionally targeted. He claims he was travelling at high speed — around 120 kilometres per hour — when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an oncoming truck. His late wife, who was seated beside him, died on the spot.

The preacher, who survived the crash with serious injuries, later gave multiple interviews from his hospital bed, accusing President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other high-ranking officials of orchestrating the incident to eliminate him due to his outspoken criticism of the regime. He also released several videos after his recovery, reiterating his claims and vowing never to be silenced.

While authorities have never officially responded to the allegations beyond initial police reports, the preacher’s supporters and a segment of the Zimbabwean public remain convinced that there was more to the 2019 crash than met the eye. To them, today’s truck accident serves as a grim reminder of that tragedy and the unresolved questions surrounding it.

.

“The same spot. Another truck. The same kind of story,” remarked one Chiwenga follower on social media, sharing images of today’s wreck alongside photos from the 2019 crash. “Coincidence or something deeper?”

Today’s incident comes at a time when the country is once again seeing heightened political tensions. With Zimbabwe facing economic hardship, widespread corruption allegations, and growing discontent over authoritarian governance, memories of politically sensitive cases like Chiwenga’s have begun to resurface in public discourse.

Chiwenga himself has remained relatively quiet in recent months, focusing on his ministry while continuing to criticize what he describes as a “bloodthirsty regime” through his online sermons. He maintains that his survival is a testament to divine protection, and he continues to speak out against state violence and repression.

The Masvingo-Harare highway, which connects the southern provinces to the capital, has long been the site of tragic accidents, many involving public transport and haulage vehicles. Efforts to improve road safety along the route have included calls for better signage, enforcement of speed limits, and the construction of dual carriageways to reduce collisions.

Yet, for those who remember the events of June 2019, the overturned orange truck is more than just another accident. It is a chilling echo of a moment that, to this day, divides opinion and remains unresolved in the hearts of many Zimbabweans.

As images of today’s crash circulate on social media, the debate over what really happened to Talent Chiwenga’s wife is once again gaining traction, bringing back painful memories, unanswered questions, and renewed calls for transparency and justice.

For now, traffic has returned to normal on the highway, and the oranges have been cleared from the roadside. But the story, much like the allegations tied to that fateful place, continues to roll on.
