A somber mood has gripped Zimbabwe’s media fraternity following the tragic death of Silas Bhunu, a dedicated driver for Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Ltd (Zimpapers), who was killed in a horrific road accident early Sunday morning in Bulawayo. Bhunu, aged 44, was struck and killed instantly by a stolen vehicle while reporting for duty.
The incident occurred as Bhunu was riding his motorcycle, heading to work to begin his shift. Eyewitnesses and police confirmed that the motorcycle was hit by a white Toyota GD6 double cab that had been reported stolen hours earlier. Bhunu was flung from his bike and died at the scene due to the impact.
According to authorities, the stolen vehicle had been undergoing repairs at a local spray-painting workshop after being involved in a previous accident. It was allegedly taken without authorization and used for a joyride, carrying nine passengers—a mix of young men and underage girls—at the time of the crash.
Following the fatal collision, five of the nine passengers, including the driver, Melusi Nkomo (20), and his accomplice, Shelton Dube (19), fled the scene. The remaining four passengers, all underage girls, stayed behind and cooperated with police officers who responded to the accident.
Thanks to the assistance of the girls, officers from the Bulawayo Traffic West Police Station were able to quickly piece together the events surrounding the crash and initiate a manhunt. Their efforts bore fruit within hours, resulting in the arrest of Nkomo, Dube, and another male passenger.
“Police managed to arrest three of the suspects who fled the scene hours after the accident. A manhunt for the remaining two is ongoing. The suspects in custody will appear in court tomorrow (today),” confirmed Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson.
Zimpapers Driver, Bhunu Killed in Tragic Crash Involving Stolen Vehicle in Bulawayo
The case has sent shockwaves through the community and sparked outrage on social media, with many Zimbabweans expressing frustration over the loss of life caused by reckless and criminal behavior. Many have demanded stricter enforcement of vehicle security, particularly in auto repair garages, and harsher penalties for individuals who steal and misuse vehicles.
Bhunu, who had worked faithfully for Zimpapers for years, is remembered by his colleagues as a hardworking and disciplined employee. In a brief statement, Zimpapers mourned his passing, saying: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our colleague, Silas Bhunu. He was a valued member of our team and will be remembered for his commitment and dedication to duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
He is survived by his wife and three children, who now face an uncertain future following the devastating loss of their breadwinner.
The tragedy has reignited broader concerns around public safety, vehicle theft, and road traffic conduct in Zimbabwe. Road safety advocates are calling on authorities to crack down on unauthorized vehicle use and enforce stricter controls to prevent joyriding—particularly when it involves minors or unlicensed individuals.
According to traffic experts, the incident underscores a growing trend of young people gaining access to vehicles through theft or negligence at garages and using them irresponsibly, often with fatal consequences.
“This is not just a traffic accident; it’s a criminal case that highlights the vulnerability of our road users to reckless behavior,” said one road safety analyst. “We need urgent reforms to prevent access to vehicles by unauthorized individuals and stronger accountability mechanisms for workshop owners and vehicle handlers.”
As investigations continue and the manhunt for the two remaining suspects intensifies, Bhunu’s family is preparing for his burial. Friends, colleagues, and members of the public have been sending messages of support and condolences, while also calling for justice to be served.
The case is expected to be presented in court soon, with police promising a thorough prosecution of those found responsible. Authorities are also appealing to the public to assist with any information that may help locate the remaining two suspects still at large.
In the meantime, Bhunu’s untimely death serves as a tragic reminder of the real-life consequences of crime and reckless behavior on the roads—claiming the lives of innocent citizens who are simply going about their daily work.
