A Masvingo-based EcoCash dealer was violently robbed of cash, airtime, and electronic gadgets valued at more than US$7,000 in a terrifying attack at his home near Mucheke Rank. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Thursday morning, has heightened fears among residents over rising crime rates in the area.
Sheperd Mutetwa, the victim and EcoCash dealer, was asleep in his rented home when three armed robbers stormed the premises just after 1 a.m. According to Mutetwa’s account, the gang forced their way in by breaking down the main door and confronted him in his bedroom.
“They demanded money and immediately began searching the room, throwing everything around,” Mutetwa recalled. “They found and took US$5,300 in cash, which I had kept in a bag, and US$1,100 worth of Econet airtime. They also grabbed two mobile phones—one of which had an agent line loaded with US$538—and a laptop.”
The trio was heavily armed, with one suspect brandishing a pistol, the second wielding a machete, and the third carrying a pickaxe. The attackers restrained EcoCash dealer by tying his hands with shoelaces to prevent any resistance.
The situation escalated when a neighbour, alerted by the noise and shouting, came to investigate. The robbers reportedly attempted to shoot the neighbour but missed, allowing the individual to flee to safety. Taking advantage of the confusion, the suspects escaped into the night before other residents could respond or call for help.
EcoCash dealer, who suffered minor injuries during the ordeal, wasted no time in reporting the crime. He immediately went to Chikato Police Station to lodge a formal complaint, hoping for swift action to apprehend the perpetrators.
When contacted, Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa was unavailable for immediate comment, citing his attendance at a briefing. However, the police have acknowledged an increase in similar incidents within the Mucheke suburb and surrounding areas over recent months.
Residents of Mucheke have expressed growing concern about the spike in violent crimes, including armed robberies and thefts. Many are calling on law enforcement to bolster patrols and improve community policing efforts to restore safety and security.
Masvingo EcoCash Dealer Loses Over US$7,000 in Violent Midnight Home Robbery
The robbery at EcoCash dealer’s home highlights the vulnerability of EcoCash dealers and other small business owners, who often handle large amounts of cash and mobile money airtime, making them attractive targets for criminals. The incident underscores the urgent need for heightened security measures and public awareness initiatives.
Local community leaders have urged residents to exercise caution, especially during nighttime hours, and to report suspicious activities promptly. They also called on the city council and police to work together in implementing effective crime prevention strategies.
The attack comes at a time when Zimbabwe is grappling with increased crime rates fueled by economic hardships and unemployment. Experts warn that without decisive action, such violent crimes could further destabilize communities and hinder economic activities.
As investigations continue, the police are appealing to anyone with information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects to come forward. Meanwhile, EcoCash dealer and his family are left to recover from the traumatic experience and rebuild after the substantial losses.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by frontline entrepreneurs in the informal sector and the importance of collective efforts to enhance security for vulnerable members of society.
