Bulawayo – Authorities are investigating a tragic hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 32-year-old pedestrian along Khami Road near Steelworks Timbers on the night of August 16, 2025. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 PM, leaving the local community shocked and mourning.
According to police reports, the victim was walking along the roadside when he was struck by an unidentified driver. Eyewitnesses stated that the driver did not stop after the collision, fleeing the scene and leaving the pedestrian critically injured. Emergency services arrived promptly, and the victim was rushed to Mpilo Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead on arrival due to severe head injuries.
The ZRP has launched a thorough investigation to track down the driver, emphasizing that leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offense under Zimbabwean law. Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Charity Charamba appealed to the public to provide any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the driver.
“The driver involved in this incident must be found. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the accident or has information about the vehicle or driver to come forward,” Charamba said. “Hit-and-run incidents put lives at risk, and we urge all drivers to take responsibility for their actions.”
Residents near the scene expressed shock over the incident, noting that the stretch of Khami Road is frequently used by pedestrians late into the night. Some witnesses reported seeing a vehicle speeding away immediately after the collision but were unable to note the registration number. Police are now reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses and collecting statements from locals to identify the driver.
Community leaders have condemned the driver’s reckless behavior, highlighting the need for drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and exercise caution, especially in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. “Drivers have a duty to protect lives. Fleeing after causing a fatal accident is not only illegal but morally wrong,” said a local ward councilor.
The ZRP also reminded drivers that road safety is a shared responsibility. “All drivers must remain vigilant and avoid negligent behavior. Speeding, distracted driving, and failure to observe traffic rules often result in avoidable tragedies like this one,” Chief Superintendent Charamba added.
In addition to appealing to the public, the police are conducting forensic analysis on vehicle debris left at the scene. This includes examining paint chips, tire marks, and other trace evidence that could provide clues about the driver. The investigation is being coordinated by the Bulawayo CID, who are working around the clock to bring the driver to justice.

Family members of the victim described the loss as devastating. They expressed frustration that the driver fled, depriving them of answers and accountability. “Our lives have been turned upside down by this senseless act. We need the driver to be found and held responsible,” said a close relative.
The ZRP assured the public that any driver found guilty of causing death and fleeing the scene would face severe legal consequences. Under Zimbabwean law, a driver involved in a fatal accident who fails to stop may face imprisonment, fines, and permanent revocation of their driving privileges.
Police have urged anyone who might have information about the driver, including vehicle type, color, or direction of escape, to contact their nearest station or call the Bulawayo CID hotline. They stressed that even small details could be crucial in identifying the driver and bringing closure to the victim’s family.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle. Drivers are urged to remain alert, respect pedestrian rights, and ensure that they are able to react safely in emergencies. The ZRP emphasized that the actions of one driver can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the immediate victims but for the wider community.
As the investigation continues, the people of Bulawayo hope that the driver will be swiftly apprehended and justice served. The community’s collective vigilance, along with police efforts, is expected to play a critical role in ensuring that the driver is held accountable for this fatal hit-and-run the pedestian.
