Zanu PF in Mashonaland East Endorses Mnangagwa to Remain in Office Beyond 2028

ZANU PF leaders in Mashonaland East have formally expressed their support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to continue steering the country beyond 2028, despite the constitutional limits on presidential terms. The declaration was made during a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting held in Marondera, where senior party officials unanimously endorsed the push for the President’s extended leadership as part of advancing Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 development agenda.

Delivering the official resolution, Pension Chiutsi, ZANU PF’s Secretary for Legal Affairs in the province, stated that every district had rallied behind Mnangagwa’s leadership. “All structures in the province were clear in their submissions. The first resolution for 2025 states: His Excellency, President and First Secretary of ZANU PF, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, must continue leading both the party and government until Vision 2030 has been fully realized,” Chiutsi announced.

The declaration was met with resounding applause from senior party members present at the meeting, positioning Mashonaland East as the first province to formally endorse Mnangagwa’s continued stay in office beyond the current constitutional framework. Analysts note that such resolutions are likely to influence other provinces’ stances on the President’s tenure as the party gears up for its 2025 electoral cycle.

Backing the resolution, Provincial Chairman Daniel Garwe praised Mnangagwa for guiding the nation through challenging periods, including natural disasters, economic shocks, and global crises. “Whether it was Cyclone Idai, the COVID-19 pandemic, or persistent droughts, the President ensured that people were not abandoned. He has shown resilience, foresight, and unity of purpose,” Garwe said.

Garwe emphasized that the party believes Mnangagwa’s leadership is central to the country’s long-term development and stability. “This is why we insist that Vision 2030 cannot be derailed. The President must remain in office until this national goal is achieved,” he declared. Vision 2030, Zimbabwe’s long-term development blueprint, aims to transform the country into a prosperous, inclusive, and industrialized economy by the end of the decade.

The PCC meeting also highlighted the importance of discipline and loyalty within party ranks. Garwe urged members to stand firmly behind the President and the party, noting that unity and cohesion are essential for implementing the national agenda. “Our duty is to stand firmly behind the President and the party. Loyalty is the foundation of our success,” he added.

Observers say that Mashonaland East’s endorsement could set a precedent for other provinces and party structures, particularly as ZANU PF looks ahead to upcoming local and national elections. Party insiders suggest that the resolution is both a symbolic and strategic move to consolidate support for Mnangagwa and ensure continuity in policy implementation across key sectors.

The endorsement comes amid a broader political debate in Zimbabwe over presidential term limits and constitutional reforms. While the Constitution currently sets out specific provisions limiting the number of terms a president can serve, proponents of Mnangagwa’s extended leadership argue that continuity is necessary for achieving long-term national objectives, particularly in economic development, infrastructure expansion, and social welfare.

Critics, however, caution that calls for extending a president’s tenure beyond constitutional limits can raise legal and governance concerns. Political analysts say balancing continuity with constitutional safeguards remains a critical challenge for Zimbabwean democracy.

Nevertheless, ZANU PF officials in Mashonaland East remain resolute in their position. The province’s formal resolution signals a clear message that party structures see Mnangagwa as indispensable to the realization of Vision 2030. Party members believe that sustained leadership is critical to navigating the country through ongoing challenges such as climate-induced disasters, economic volatility, and global uncertainties.

The Marondera meeting concluded with renewed pledges from party officials to rally grassroots support behind the President, emphasizing community engagement, discipline, and adherence to party policies. Leaders also underscored the importance of mobilizing citizens around Vision 2030 initiatives, framing Mnangagwa’s leadership as central to the nation’s collective progress.

As Zimbabwe approaches key political milestones, including the 2025 general elections, Mashonaland East’s endorsement is likely to fuel discussions both within and outside ZANU PF. Analysts predict that similar resolutions from other provinces could strengthen Mnangagwa’s political influence, reinforcing his position as a pivotal figure in the country’s developmental agenda.

For now, ZANU PF in Mashonaland East remains united in its call for Mnangagwa to continue leading the nation, framing the endorsement as a vote of confidence in his ability to steer Zimbabwe toward a prosperous and stable future under the Vision 2030 framework.
