Zimbabwean football icon Sunday Marimo “Mhofu” Chidzambwa has been honoured for his immense contribution to the development of the game, following a glowing tribute by businessman and philanthropist Sir Wicknell Chivayo.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Zimbabwean football history, Chidzambwa is celebrated for shaping the identity and discipline of both Dynamos FC and the national team, the Warriors. Known affectionately as “The General,” his leadership style was defined by calm authority, military-like precision, and an uncompromising commitment to structure and discipline.
Zim’s First Afcon
Chidzambwa famously guided the Warriors to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification in 2004, a historic milestone that placed Zimbabwe on the continental football stage. He went on to lead the national team to several other tournament qualifications and oversaw one of the country’s proudest moments by winning Zimbabwe’s first-ever COSAFA Cup title, later adding three more COSAFA trophies to his legacy.
Football fans and players alike recall that when Chidzambwa was at the helm, expectations were consistently exceeded. His leadership philosophy, summed up in his enduring mantra “no stars, just structure,” prioritised teamwork over individual egos and instilled discipline across every team he coached.
In his tribute, Sir Wicknell also highlighted Chidzambwa’s patriotism and continued involvement in football beyond the touchline. Despite being in his later years, the legendary coach remains an active member of Coaches4ED, reflecting what Chivayo described as his unwavering nationalism and commitment to Zimbabwe’s development.
Sir Wicknell further praised Chidzambwa for openly acknowledging President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s support for local football, noting that such recognition demonstrated gratitude and loyalty to national leadership.
As a gesture of appreciation for a lifetime of football excellence and patriotic service, Sir Wicknell announced that he had gifted Chidzambwa a brand-new 2026 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD6 4×2, valued at USD 72,000, fully paid for and ready for collection at Exquisite Car Dealership. In addition, the football legend will receive USD 20,000 in cash to cover fuel and personal expenses.
“Zimbabwe celebrates you,” Sir Wicknell declared, as he congratulated Chidzambwa on a career that has left an indelible mark on the nation’s football history.
