WATCH: SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA ON XENOPHOBIA

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, in the eye of a storm after his electioneering attacks on foreigners were linked to a recent wave of attacks against foreigners in Durban, has said he condemned violence “in the strongest terms”.

Ramaphosa has been under pressure to withdraw campaign rally comments partly blamed for the recent xenophobic attacks in Durban.

“We are going to bring this to an end and those who are operating illegally, wherever they come from must now know,” Ramaphosa had vowed to crack down on businesses operating illegally in townships and rural areas.

Speaking at an African National Congress fundraising dinner held at the Coastlands Hotel in Durban on Friday night, Ramaphosa said the attacks on foreigners, which started on Sunday and continued into Tuesday this week, were “wrong”.
