92 people have been killed in over 1 200 road traffic accidents from the 15th to the 26th of this month.
There has been an increase in the number of fatal road traffic accidents recorded during the festive season compared to the same period last year.
The figures were confirmed at a joint news conference held by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) in Harare this Tuesday with most of the accidents being attributed to human error.
“333 people were injured, 92 were killed in 1285 road traffic accidents.69 were fatal accidents. On Christmas day alone we had a total of 119 road traffic accidents recorded countrywide with 10 being fatal, killing 13 people and injuring 89,” said ZRP Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Managing Director, Mr Munesu Munodawafa urged drivers to exercise extreme caution to avoid loss of lives, “We are still in the middle of the festive season. We continue to urge drivers to be sober and avoid overloading.”
Meanwhile, there have been no major road traffic accidents involving public service vehicles this festive season, with police concerned with the number of private vehicles involved in accidents.
