200 Women in Bikita benefited from the empowerment programme

CLOSE to 200 women from Bikita South in Masvingo Province have benefited from a skills transfer programme on income-generating projects. The training programme is part of the activities being conducted by the ruling ZANU PF Party to empower women in rural areas.

The women took part in short courses in detergent making, nurse aid, hotel and catering, as well as baking.

A beneficiary noted, ‘‘We are grateful to the Second Republic for such programmes because we are now being able to look after our families.’’

Another beneficiary said, ‘‘Going forward, I am expecting to start my own hair salon where I will be able to employ and train others.’’

Area legislator, Honourable Josiah Sithole who facilitated the programme in partnership with Tonganyika Trust said it is meant to empower women for them to sustain their livelihoods.

Honourable Sithole noted, ‘‘Vision 2030 can only be achieved if our women are empowered to take part in various programmes that ensure improved livelihoods.’’

Tonganyika Trust Training Officer Ms Esther Mutekede said, ‘‘We are moving around training women on various programmes that they are able to look after themselves and their families.’’

Women empowerment cuts across all pillars of the country’s development strategy, hence a number of programmes are being rolled out by Government and the ruling party.
