20-year jail term for vandalising ZESA transformers

Three men from Zaka have been jailed for a cumulative 80 years after they were found guilty of vandalising ZESA transformers.

The three, Israel Ngorima aged 18, Julias Mazhetese, 27 and Caution Masunda,26 were convicted on their own plea of guilt.

They were each given 20 years for two counts of vandalising ZESA transformers.

Masunda was given another 20-year jail term for two similar cases.

He will serve an effective 40-year jail term while his accomplices will each serve 20 years.

The trio appeared at the Chiredzi Magistrate court.

Facts are that between December 2022 and February this year, the three went to two schools in Zaka where they vandalised ZESA transformers.

Masunda committed two similar offences in the company of his co-accused who is still at large.

When they were arrested they were found in possession of various tools they used in committing the offence.

Vandalism of public utilities and infrastructure attracts a mandatory custodial sentence of 10 years.
