An 18-year-old Form Six learner committed suicide at ZRP High School around 5 PM on Monday, 13 March.
ZRP Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations), Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the pupil as Prince Tawonezvi.
Asst Comm Nyathi said police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. He said:
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the tragic and unfortunate death of an upper sixth student, Prince Tawonezvi (18) at ZRP High School on 13th March 2023 at 1700 hours.
The student allegedly committed suicide in circumstances that are now subject to investigations.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses condolence to the Tawonezvi family and students at the school.
The suicide at ZRP High is the fourth reported incident of school-going teenage suicides in the country in March.
Earlier this month, 14-year-old Rumbidzai Chimusasa committed suicide in a school toilet at St Mary’s Secondary School in Chikanga, Mutare after she had just been reprimanded for her wayward behaviour by her grandmother.
Last week, 15-year-old Jayden Saudan, a Form Three pupil at Hamilton High School, committed suicide after drinking poison.
On Sunday, a Form One learner at a private school in Luveve suburb, Pauline Moyo, committed suicide by hanging.
