Zim Hockey Junior teams will depart for Egypt next Wednesday

THE junior men and women’s hockey teams have trooped in camp at St John’s College in Harare for the final technical preparations ahead of the Junior Africa Cup that gets underway next Sunday.

The junior teams will depart for Egypt next Wednesday and they will begin with warm up matches before the tournament kicks off.

Zim hockey under 21 women’s coach Bradley Heuer said, ‘‘We have been preparing well and we are ready for the games. We would want to travel earlier so that we acclimatise and get used to the Egyptian turf. We will get in touch with the South African coach so that we play warm up matches before we play our opening games. I believe we have now have a strong side because we have been training a lot so it’s now our tactics to play each team and see how it goes.’’

Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, Kenya and Nigeria will field both men and women teams at the tournament, with only Ghana set to send one team.

The six countries will clash in the land of the Pharaohs to claim the two slots as a qualification ticket for the Junior World Cup later this year.

Zimbabwe men’s side will face hosts, Egypt on the opening day, while their female counterparts clash with Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the ladies’ team will mark their fifth appearance at the Junior Africa Cup.
