Drug peddler caught with 3 kgs of heroin at Robert Mugabe Airport

The Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics have arrested a foreign national, Hans Arne Ingemar Peterson aged 71 at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport, in connection with possession of 3kgs of Heroin worth more than ZWL$3 million.

It is alleged that this Sunday morning, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Harare received information from a source to the effect that the accused who is of Swedish national was in possession of heroin which he intended to smuggle to Mynmar, Thailand.

ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Zbc News that after receiving the information, Drugs and Narcotics detectives waylaid the accused at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport so as to intercept him as he checked in.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi added that the detectives looked for the accused person in the Airport departures hall and located him at a Cafe with a trolley loaded with two monarch bags.

Detectives approached the accused person and took him to ZRP Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport where they searched him and found some brownish powder stashed in a plastic bag in a false compartment created in the accused’s bag.

A test was carried out on the contraband in the presence of the accused and it tested positive for Heroin.

The drug was also weighed in the presence of the accused and weighed approximately 3 kilograms with an estimated street value of ZWL$ 3 400 000-00.

The government embarked on the operation that targets drug peddlers and suppliers in February this year under the operation code named ‘No to Dangerous Drugs and Illicit Substances’ in an effort to cut the drug supply chain.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
