PSMAS To Re-Open Hospitals

Harare (New Ziana)- Some of Premier Service Medical Investments (PSMI) hospital facilities in Harare will re-open on May 2 after almost seven months of closure, an official has said.

The closure of the hospital and several other PSMI facilities, was a result of cashflow problems experienced by the parent company, Premier Service Medical Aid (PSMAS), which led workers to down tools due to unpaid salaries. The medical aid society, which was formed by civil servants, runs a medical insurance scheme for government workers, and has other health-related subsidiaries.

It runs clinics and hospitals around the country, and has a membership of nearly one million, mostly government workers.

PSMI workers committee chair Munyaradzi Nharaunda said the return of Westend hospital in Harare and other facilities were a culmination of talks between the government, PSMAS and workers.

“We have been closed for a while due to circumstances beyond our control. The other thing is that PSMI deviated from its mandate as some executives were stealing money, venturing into gold dealing things, doing things which had nothing to do with the company.

“We will open on May 2. From May 2, every PSMI employee will be ready to get back to work. The nation should be on the lookout for information on the opened sites. With certainty, we know Westend, Prestige as well as the Airport hospital will be open,” he said.

The development comes as four PSMAS executives including chief executive officer Farai Muchena appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly squandering US$702,386 which was meant for drug purchases after misrepresenting facts to Fidelity Printers in a gold deal.
