Shopkeeper seriously burnt after his shop caught fire

A shopkeeper was burnt beyond recognition after his shop caught fire on Monday, 10 April at around 3 am. The man was asleep in the store in Welverdiend Village in the Greater Manyeleti area of Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga when the incident happened.

Mahlekisana Mnisi (35), the landlord’s cousin, said he was woken up by a call from the panicking shopkeeper asking for help inside the shop.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes seeing the whole shop up in flames and a dark cloud of smoke coming from the rooftop and windows. The shopkeeper sounded like he was trapped inside. He was asking for immediate help,” said Mahlekisana.

He said they quickly ran out and broke the wall down on the other side.

“But the fire and smoke were too strong. They were spreading to the other apartments quickly,” he said.

Mahlekisana said when they tried to call him later, he didn’t answer.

“Residents came in numbers and joined us, helping us to put out the fire using buckets of water and sand. We later found him burnt and already dead inside the apartment.

“So we immediately noticed the police who arrived with the paramedics, who also certified him dead,” said Mnisi.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed the police received a complaint at about 5.45am that a shop was had burnt down in Welverdiend Village on 10 April.

“Upon arrival on the scene, they found the shop owner who showed them the burnt down shop and the deceased who was inside the shop. The cause of the fire is unknown at the stage. Police have opened cases of arson and inquest,” he said.
