Two artisanal miners have died while five others are feared dead after an informal mine shaft collapsed at Ran mine in Bindura. The incident occurred this Thursday afternoon at the shaft where 12 people were killed in November 2021.
One of the eyewitnesses, who spoke to ZBC News, Obert Nyama, confirmed his brother was in the mine shaft with about five other people while other fellow artisanal miners were at a loss for words.
Acting Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Cosmas Chiringa confirmed the deaths after visiting the scene of the incident accompanied by officials from other government agencies, Ran Mine management, and members of the Mine Rescue Association of Zimbabwe.
Recommendations have been made to permanently seal off the area to avoid further accidents.
Incidents of this nature have been on the increase with the government pushing for the formalization of mining operations to improve safety.
