Billy Porter and his husband, Adam Smith, have called it quits after six years of marriage.
“I can confirm that Billy Porter and his husband Adam Smith have made the sad decision to end their marriage after six years,” the “Pose” star’s rep, Simon Halls, told People on Wednesday.
“The decision was an amicable and mutual one and was made after much consideration. They continue to love and support each other as they embark on this next chapter.”
Halls said that Porter and Smith ask for “privacy” while trying to navigate their split. Reps for the “Cinderella” star did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment. The former couple met at a dinner party in 2009 and dated for about a year before going their separate ways.
When reflecting on the early days of their romance, Porter told People the pair were “enamored” with one another but things quickly “imploded” as they started to get more serious.
However, they rekindled five years later and eventually said “I do” in January 2017 — just two weeks after Porter, 53, popped the question.
After the wedding, Porter revealed why marriage was so important to the pair, who both “grew up in households where who we are is labeled an ‘abomination.’”
“The thought of marriage, there was no context for it — there was no dreaming about it because there was no context to dream; it was unspoken and very clear that the sanctity of marriage was not for us,” he told People.
“So to see that come around, to see that tide turned, it still takes my breath away; I’m still trying to find the words to describe it,” he added.
In the years since their nuptials, Smith has accompanied the actor on various red carpets, where Porter is always the star of the show.
Porter has been breaking gender norms for years, from his infamous Christian Sirirano velvet tuxedo gown to his iconic — and now “immortalized” via Madame Tussaud’s — 2020 Grammy’s look.
While the former couple doesn’t have any children, they do share a cockapoo named Lola. This was Porter’s first marriage and Smith’s second.
