Mortal Kombat 1 has released a new trailer that revealed the return of Geras as a playable character. Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the iconic fighting game franchise with yet another reboot of its universe.
Mortal Kombat 1 confirms that the events of the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion are canon, more exactly Liu Kang’s ending. In this finale, Liu Kang defeats Shang Tsung and gains the power to create a New Era where everyone can live a quiet life or continue fighting.
This New Era will give fighters completely different roles than fans are used to seeing, and every Mortal Kombat 1 trailer released confirms the changes fans are expecting.
NetherRealm Studios released a new trailer during DreamCon 2023 that revealed Geras as a playable character. First seen in Mortal Kombat 11, Geras was the loyal servant of Kronika and an individual with god-like powers.
While his role in Mortal Kombat 11 was as an antagonist, the Mortal Kombat 1 trailer reveals that Geras is now the guardian of the Hourglass used by Liu Kang to defeat Shang Tsung.
The trailer also shows that Geras and Liu Kang have a friendly relationship, though it doesn’t go into further detail. Although Geras’ return to Mortal Kombat wasn’t expected by fans, the announcement was met with a lot of positivity.
In addition to announcing Geras as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1, the trailer showed off his new design and some of his moves. Geras is still the master of the sands of time, which are used to attack opponents alongside the Hourglass and extended time-stop powers.
In the new trailer, players can also see new Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities confirmed, the first with Geras grinding down Baraka against a sandstorm. In the second Fatality, Liu Kang takes Sub-Zero into space and gives the Lin Kuei clan member death in true Mortal Kombat fashion.
The return of Geras is just one of several Mortal Kombat 1 news revealed by NetherRealm Studios. Last week Mortal Kombat 1 revealed the voice actor for Omni-Man, who will be one of the guest characters added through the Kombat Pack.
For players who are excited about all the news related to the game, a Mortal Kombat 1 beta is confirmed for August. It will give players access to more of the base roster, the standard 1v1 mode, and a single-player version of Klassic Towers.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
