The cause of death of legendary American TV host Bob Barker has been confirmed as Alzheimer’s Disease, according to reports. The former Price Is Right host died last month at the age of 99, with the star said to have died “peacefully” at home. According to TMZ, the star’s death certificate labeled the disease as a factor.
It’s said his death came “years” after his condition was diagnosed, with the star said to have kept his condition private. Bob, whose real name was Robert William Barker, was best known and loved for hosting the huge CBS gameshow The Price Is Right. He held the show’s hosting duties between 1972 and 2007. Between 1957 and 1975 he also hosted Truth or Consequences.
At the time his death was announced, it was reported as “natural causes”. He had suffered a few health issues throughout his life, including in 1999 when he had “clumsiness in his right hand” before being admitted to the hospital and being diagnosed with a partially blocked left carotid artery. He then underwent carotid endarterectomy to remove the blockage before returning to work within a month.
Then, in 2002, after he had filmed the 30th season of the hit gameshow, Bob suffered two further health issues, including a stroke and prostate surgery. Reports also say that he had “several mild bouts with skin cancer”, with him speaking out in an interview about his sun tanning habits.
Following his death, tributes poured in from fans and celebrities alike. Among those commenting on Twitter was a fan who wrote: “I grew up watching The Price Is Right. every time I’d go to my grandma’s house it would be on. easily the best game show on TV, rip to a legend.”
Another added: “RIP to the GOAT Bob Barker Whether it was being home from school sick or during the summer I never missed a show. Thanks for the memories.”
Bob’s wife, Dorothy Jos, whom he married in 1945, died in 1981 of lung cancer. The pair had no children, and he never remarried.
