Flavor Flav is speaking out on the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of his late friend Tupac Shakur. The former Public Enemy rapper, 64, shared his reaction to the arrest of Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection to Tupac’s death while talking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Brent Shapiro Foundation Summer Spectacular, held in Los Angeles on Saturday.
“I’m so happy right now that they finally found Tupac’s shooter,” he says. “It was bound to happen one day if he didn’t turn himself in, because he told on himself, I heard.”
“He wrote a book about it and all of this stuff, but if he didn’t do it, I felt the streets would turn him in one day,” Flav adds. “So I’m so happy that they found him.”
“Tupac is the reason why I’m able to stand here and talk to you today,” Flav goes on to explain, before revealing a powerful connection between the pair that, he says, changed his life.
“Way back in the day, there was an incident where I was almost murdered by accident. Tupac is the one that stopped me from doing it.”
“So thank God for Tupac being in my life,” Flav adds.
The rapper also says that the first time he met Tupac was when “he asked for my autograph.”
“That was crazy,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee recalls. “Yeah, I was crazy honored.”
On Friday, Davis was arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in connection with the 1996 murder of Shakur, marking the biggest development in the cold case in nearly 27 years, Associated Press and ABC News reported.
Davis was taken into custody Friday morning and charged with one count of murder with a gang enhancement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced at a Friday press conference.
Flav hopes that Shakur’s family will now have justice following the suspect’s arrest.
“Because it’s been a minute,” Flav says. “It’s been a minute now. You know what I mean? So yeah, God is good, man. God turned this guy in. So glad. So glad.”
Flav has spoken publicly before about his friendship with Tupac and he previously collaborated with the late rapper on the 1993 track “You Can’t See What I Can’t See” by Heavy D and the Boyz.
His chat with PEOPLE came a day after he posted his response to the new development in Shakur’s murder case on Instagram. “Poetic Justice for my man 2Pac,” Flav captioned an image of Tupac with details of the new arrest written across.
Flav’s social media post came as Jada Pinkett Smith — who called Shakur her “best friend” — shared her reaction to Davis’ arrest on Friday. Smith, 52, said she hopes for “closure” over the death of Shakur in a post on her Instagram Story, following the news.
“Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure,” Smith wrote in response to the arrest. “R.I.P. Pac,” she finished, adding a dove emoji.

Pete Davidson, 29, crashed his SUV when he was leaving The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA, where he had a stand-up show on Saturday night, according to Page Six. The comedian hosted an afterparty and when he left the venue at around 10 p.m., an eyewitness saw him swipe the side of his car against the wall outside of the building. The outlet shared photos of Pete and some other people in his vehicle from the same night as well as a photo of the post-crash damage.
Pete, who wore a green hoodie, appeared to be holding a cigarette in his hand, in some of the photos and seemed to hold up the same hand to shield his face from nearby cameras.
