Julia Fox is recalling the near-fatal drug overdose that she said changed the course of her life. While promoting her new book Down the Drain on The View Wednesday, Fox, 33, was asked by co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin about how the actress, while struggling with addiction, “overdosed so many times she lost count.”
Fox recounted one particularly disturbing memory before being saved by paramedics: “The near-death experience was crazy, because the whole tunnel thing and all of that is real. But I saw it as a window, and the light was just spilling out from the window.”
“Then there was this little voice in my head that was like, ‘Wait a minute — you’re dying,’ ” added Fox. “I was just like, ‘Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.’ ”
The Uncut Gems actress said she soon woke up in an ambulance.
“I always go back to that one instance of seeing that light and feeling so warm — almost too warm — and I just knew that I wasn’t gonna come back if I went to that place,” said Fox.
Though she considers herself more “spiritual” than “religious,” Fox said, “In a way, that happening really restored my faith.”
In her book, Fox, who grew up in New York City and in Italy, writes about trying marijuana for the first time at 11 years old. She then tried heroin at 16: “I know I’m flirting with fire, but it’s just too damn good to resist,” she wrote of the drug use.
Fox recently said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that she takes Suboxone, a prescription medication used to treat opioid addiction. She said that “saved my life, for sure.”
She further told Rolling Stone, “I do want to talk about the Suboxone, and I do want to raise awareness, because I feel there’s a stigma around these maintenance drugs, but they really do f—ing save lives.”
And having two of her close friends die of drug overdoses has changed her perspective. “If I died from opiates and then I found out they were still using opiates, I’d be so mad from the grave I’d haunt their asses,” she told the Los Angeles Times.
Since working through her addiction, Fox, who is mom to 2½-year-old son Valentino, told the Los Angeles Times she hasn’t been tempted to relapse: “I have tunnel vision. I’m on a mission. I can’t get caught up. It’s not cute. I’m 33. I’ve learned my lesson, believe it or not. It’s just not worth it.”
