Kim Kardashian pleaded with her ex-husband Kanye West to resume his medication in a leaked clip from a 2018 documentary about the rapper.
In the clip, Kanye is driving while speaking to Kim on the phone. He starts the conversation by asking her to “pump him up” at times, rather than labelling him a “narcisisit” when he defends himself.
He told her: “When I’m pumping myself up, I would love it if you were like ‘Yes babe, you the s**t’ instead of when I have to stand up for myself you’re like ‘Why do you sound like that, you’re narcissistic.'” The reality star seemed understanding and agreed to improve on her responses, telling her husband: “I totally get it, I need to work on it.”
“I appreciate it, I think you’re doing better,” Kanye replies. The conversation then turns to the topic of his medication, which he was previously taking for his bipolar disorder, which he was diagnosed for at the age of 39 after years of unpredictable behaviour.
“I know you said you’d never get on it but what if,” Kim can be heard saying. “I think it could be helpful, you want to be trying the best medicines out there.”
Two years after the footage was filmed, Kim had placed her faith in a promise Kanye had made to remain on his meds, but that was broken during the summer of 2020, a tumutous time for the couple who were “on the brink of divorce.” A source told People at the time: “He’s off his meds, he promised he’d stay on them.
“The last time, part of his negotiation with Kim was that he’d get back on his medication and he would work very hard to control his impulses. He made a lot of promises,” they claimed. “And now those promises are broken, less than a month later.”
“It’s the same thing over and over and over again. He’s on very thin ice with her right now, and she’s truly trying to decide what to do to protect the kids, but also her own sanity. The whole thing is discouraging and difficult for her,” the source concluded.
Kim publicly addressed her husband’s diagnosis in a lengthy statement posted on her Instagram Story in July 2020, asking fans for “compassion.” In 2019, she told Vogue that Kanye had opted out of treating the disorder with pharmaceuticals.
“For him, being on medication is not really an option,” she said at the time. “Because it just changes who he is.” Kim and Kanye split in 2021.
