Missy Elliott is still in awe that she is set to become the first ever female rapper to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Talking to Robin Roberts on Thursday’s Good Morning America the iconic star admitted that despite three decades in the music business she can’t believe that she is being given such a legendary accolade. Missy, 52, said that she had always wanted to be a “superstar… I never wavered. I never changed. I said it every time.”
She went on to confess that “words cannot describe” the honour she feels at being named at the ceremony on Friday night alongside her fellow 2023 Inductees – George Michael, Sheryl Crow, Kate Bush, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners. Missy told Robin how she had always felt as a hip-hop artist entering the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame felt “so far out of reach.”
She also admitted feeling that the nod was proof that “no matter what people say the hip-hop world is something special and unique,” especially as it is the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop. Talking about her fellow inductees she said: “To be even at a table with them is a blessing, past a blessing, there’s got to be a bigger word than that.”
Missy will join a select few rappers who already have their names on display in the RRHOF Museum in Cleveland. Big name hip-hop stars who already made their way in include N.W.A, Public Enemy, The Beastie Boys, Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash, The Furious Five, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Eminem.
The chart-topper will be inducted by her close friend of 20 years Queen Latifah. She heaped praise on her calling her someone who “come before me, open that door, left it open… And I owe so many flowers, bouquets. It’s not enough bouquets for those women that came before me. And she’s one of those women.”
Missy also revealed that her mum will be coming to the ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn – and it will be her first time ever seeing her daughter perform live. She told GMA: “She’s never been to a show because, you know, I had some little words I didn’t ever want her to hear. And so she’s coming for the first time.”
A live coast-to-coast broadcast of the induction ceremony will air on Disney+ on Friday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The show will be available to stream following the broadcast. ABC will subsequently air a three-hour 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony prime-time special on January 1 at 8-11 p.m. ET.
