Sofia Vergara, 51, confessed she split from her “younger husband” Joe Manganiello in a row over having kids. The Modern Family star shocked fans when she and Joe, 47, announced last year that they were separating after seven years of marriage. In a statement, they said it was a “difficult decision” to divorce, but at the time, they refused to comment on the reason behind their surprise split.
In a new interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Sofia candidly discussed the breakdown of her marriage to the Magic Mike star, and blamed an ongoing disagreement over having children was the reason they split. “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” she explained. “I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore.”
The Colombian actress is already mother to son Manolo, 32, who she shares with ex-husband Joe Gonzalez, and admitted she was “ready to be a grandmother” rather than have any more babies of her own. Sofia also insisted she would only date again if her future partner “had his own children”.
She said it was the “natural way of things”, and candidly shared she was “almost in menopause”. Sofia also joked that when her son Manolo becomes a father, he can “bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life.”
The couple first began dating in 2014, and Joe previously shared Sofia had reservations over their age difference on their first date. “Our first date was her giving me every reason why it would never work out. Like, ‘You’re too young, you’re an actor, you’re this, you’re that,’ and she was just doing it to hear herself say it. She was trying to talk herself out of going there,” he told Haute Living in 2015.
The True Blood star proposed to Sofia after just six months of dating, and the couple tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida, with around 350 guests – including Sofia’s Modern Family co-stars Sarah Hyland and Jesse Tyler Ferguson – in attendance. Shortly before they exchanged vows, Sofia revealed in an interview with Cosmo for Latinas that having kids “is not a priority in our lives”, but would be “very happy” if they were to start a family of their own.
Since announcing they were parting ways in July last year, Sofia has been seen on a string of dates with orthopaedic surgeon Justin Saliman. Meanwhile, Joe has been dating actress Caitlin O’Connor after the reportedly met in a hot tub at a party in September last year.
