Fire destroys Shearwater Adventures flat in Victoria Falls

A fire engulfed a flat in Bongoland, Victoria Falls on Friday evening, damaging one unit in a block of apartments owned by Shearwater Adventures, where employees of the tour operating company reside.

Firefighters arrived shortly after receiving the report, containing the blaze to a single flat. Despite their prompt response, it took over two hours for the firefighters, dispatched by the Victoria Falls City Council with three fire tenders, to fully extinguish the fire. Continuous smoke emanating from two geysers on the roof posed challenges during the operation.

Residents of the complex acted swiftly to cut off electricity in the residential area, a proactive measure to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring flats.

However, despite wearing overalls and helmets, the council’s firefighting efforts were hindered by incomplete protective gear for some firefighters, who lacked goggles, masks, or gloves. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, as the flat was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
