President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced a government commitment to aid food-insecure Zimbabweans affected by the El Niño-induced drought, ramping up nationwide food assistance efforts to prevent hunger-related fatalities.
Speaking at the Johane Marange Apostolic Church’s annual Passover service in Mafararikwa, Marange, President Mnangagwa acknowledged the challenges posed by poor rainfall this year. “We are facing hunger,” he stated, reassuring the public of strategic grain reserves and intensified distribution efforts across all regions. Stressing the urgency, he emphasized that no one should perish from hunger and outlined plans for free food distribution, coordinated with the Treasury and various partners to ensure comprehensive coverage.
“This food will be provided free of charge,” Mnangagwa affirmed, underscoring ongoing efforts to reach every vulnerable household promptly. The President also shared his spiritual convictions, advocating for leaders to seek divine guidance. “Leaders who distance themselves from God are bound to fail,” he remarked, highlighting his commitment to seeking blessings and expressing gratitude for spiritual leaders’ influence, including St. Nimrod Taguta of the Johane Marange Apostolic Church.
Despite cutting short a trip to Mozambique, Mnangagwa reaffirmed his dedication to attending the Passover annually, acknowledging the importance of the occasion and pledging continued support for the church’s endeavors.
Church leaders reciprocated with appreciation for Mnangagwa’s humility and backing. Isaac Makurumidze commended the President’s presence and assistance, while Angolan preacher Eriah Zhuao urged African leaders to emulate his positive engagement with religious communities.
The event drew attendance from several Cabinet ministers and senior government officials, underscoring the significance of collaborative efforts to alleviate food insecurity amidst challenging climatic conditions.
