Self-proclaimed prophet Gift Mushonga has appeared in the Harare Magistrates Court facing charges of rape, casting a dark shadow over his reputation in Maro village, Domboshava. Known as Madzibaba Gift Mushonga, the controversial figure stands accused of betraying the trust of two women by allegedly raping them on separate occasions. These alleged crimes took place under the guise of delivering the victims from spiritual afflictions.
According to testimonies presented in court on Saturday, Mushonga reportedly abused his position of spiritual authority at his shrine, a place intended for solace and refuge. The allegations detail how the first victim sought blessings from Madzibaba Mushonga on the 9th of this month for safe travel to her rural home, only to be subjected to rape.
The court further heard that the following day, another woman fell victim to similar alleged exploitation at the same shrine. Madzibaba Mushonga was remanded into custody and advised to seek bail at the High Court. His next court appearance is scheduled for the 26th of this month.
These charges have shocked the community, which once looked to Mushonga for spiritual guidance and protection. Now, they face the troubling reality of allegations that have tarnished his standing as a trusted religious figure.
