A tragic incident unfolded at Nketa High School in Bulawayo, where a female student, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly took her own life following alleged rejection from her boyfriend regarding her pregnancy. The Form Four student was laid to rest on Monday in a solemn ceremony attended by friends, family, and community members.
Reports suggest that upon discovering her pregnancy, the girl turned to her boyfriend, a senior student in Upper Six at the same school, for support. However, he reportedly disowned the pregnancy, which is believed to have deeply affected her, leading to suicidal thoughts. On July 12, she visited her boyfriend’s residence, and later that day, her aunt found her and brought her home. Despite efforts by her aunt to intervene, the girl tragically took her own life by hanging herself.
Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, although police reports initially did not mention the pregnancy. According to police statements, the girl had left home under the pretext of attending extra lessons but was observed entering her boyfriend’s residence. Her aunt, concerned by her absence, later discovered her lifeless body hanging from a guava tree in their yard. Despite immediate medical attention upon arrival of emergency services, she was pronounced dead.
Assistant Inspector Msebele emphasized the importance of children prioritizing their education, obeying parental guidance, and seeking support during challenging times rather than resorting to drastic measures like suicide.
