Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has reportedly outpaced three competing companies, including one linked to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s sons, to secure a partnership with Starlink in Zimbabwe. This development, disclosed through Mnangagwa’s X account, designates Chivayo’s IMC Communications as Starlink’s local partner. Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, specializes in high-speed internet services via satellite.
The announcement has stirred tensions, notably with First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa, amid claims that companies associated with her sons were overlooked. There are concerns regarding IMC Communications’ preparedness for the partnership, as it has encountered difficulties in establishing direct communication with Starlink and finalizing necessary agreements.
Despite doubts surrounding the selection process and IMC Communications’ readiness, the Ministry of ICT has proceeded with approval, prompting inquiries from sidelined companies and fueling suspicions of preferential treatment due to Chivayo’s connections.
Chivayo’s controversial history, which includes prior involvement in procurement scandals, has amplified scrutiny of his business dealings, particularly about government contracts and high-profile partnerships.
