ZIFA appoints Michael Nees new Warriors head coach

In a significant move for Zimbabwean football, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has appointed Michael Nees as the new head coach of the Warriors. Nees, a seasoned German international, brings a wealth of experience to the role, which he will assume with immediate effect. At 57 years old, Nees has an extensive background in international football. His most recent position was with the Kosovo Football Association, where he served as the technical director and head coach of the U-21 men’s team. This role marked his second stint in the Balkans, having previously managed Rwanda and Seychelles in Africa.

Nees’s coaching career spans various continents, showcasing his adaptability and expertise. He has also led teams in Japan and was a part of England’s technical team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. His diverse experience is expected to bring fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to the Warriors.

ZIFA Normalization Committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa expressed strong confidence in Nees’s appointment. “ZIFA is confident that Michael Nees’ appointment will usher in a new era for the Warriors,” Mutasa stated. “His vast experience combined with his innovative coaching style makes him the ideal candidate to lead our team to new heights.”

Nees steps into the role as the first substantive coach for the Warriors since Croatian tactician Zdravko Logarusic was dismissed in 2021. His tenure will commence with the Warriors’ campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which begins in September. This upcoming challenge will be crucial in setting the tone for his leadership and shaping the future of Zimbabwean football.
