Chimombe and Mpofu to face fraud charges in October trial

The High Court has scheduled the trial for Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, who are facing serious fraud charges. The court will hear the case from October 1 to 4, with proceedings set to continue throughout the four days. The indictment was issued by Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa, and the State, represented by Anesu Chirenje, has confirmed that all necessary preparations for the trial are complete. Chirenje noted, “Everything is now in order. I have served the accused with State papers, including documentary evidence such as the government gazette, CR14, tax clearance certificates, contract addendum, and the cancellation of the contract document, among other things.”

The allegations against Chimombe and Mpofu involve the forgery of a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Tax clearance certificate and a National Social Security Authority (NSSA) compliance certificate. These documents were purportedly submitted as part of a bidding process for a tender from the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries, and Rural Development. The bid was for the supply and delivery of goats for the Presidential Goat Pass-on Scheme. The accused misrepresented that their company, Blackdeck Private Limited, was in full compliance with ZIMRA and NSSA regulations.

As a result of this misrepresentation, Blackdeck Private Limited was awarded the contract and received US$7 million from the Ministry of Lands. In addition to the upcoming trial, the High Court is also scheduled to hear a bail appeal for Chimombe and Mpofu on Thursday. The two businessmen are also facing an additional fraud case involving US$9 million, which is currently pending before the Magistrates Court. The outcome of these proceedings will be closely watched as they unfold over the coming weeks.
