Fire destroys Brenda Fassie’s family home

The Cape Town home of late music icon Brenda Fassie has been severely damaged by a fire that consumed a significant portion of the star’s cherished memorabilia. The blaze occurred at Makana Square in Langa, where Brenda Fassie’s brother, Themba Fassie, was residing in a back flatlet.

Themba Fassie, who was at a neighbor’s house when the fire broke out, was alerted to the emergency and rushed back to find the situation dire. “Someone was summoned to get me from where I was. They told me my house was on fire. When I got home, the neighbors were already trying to extinguish the fire. They managed to break the door but I have burglar bars,” he recounted.

The fire destroyed most of the contents of the flat, including personal belongings and several awards that celebrated Brenda Fassie’s illustrious career. Brenda Fassie, known for her influential contributions to Afro-pop, passed away on May 9, 2004, at 39. Her home in Langa, where she was born and which she renovated in the 1980s, had been a repository for her legacy, including awards and memorabilia that now lie in ruin.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage. The loss is deeply felt by the Fassie family and fans alike, as it not only represents a personal loss for Themba Fassie but also the destruction of artifacts linked to Brenda Fassie’s remarkable career.
