Police are currently investigating the deaths of three women whose bodies were discovered inside a home in Ceres. The women had reportedly carried coal into the residence located on Uitsig Street. Their bodies were found on Sunday, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
According to police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk, an inquest docket has been opened, and post-mortems are planned to determine the precise cause of death. “Post-mortem(s) will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The investigations continue,” van Wyk confirmed. As of Wednesday, further details about the incident have not been released.
In response to the tragic event, Wendy Kaizer-Philander, DA constituency head in the Witzenberg Municipality, expressed her condolences: “I am deeply saddened and sorry to hear about the passing of the three women. It is indeed a tragic and devastating event, especially during this month. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, loved ones, and community at large as they navigate through this difficult time. May their souls rest in eternal peace.”
This incident echoes a similar tragedy that occurred last month in Orkney, North West. The SANDF confirmed that four officers—Lance Corporal LS Mbongwa, Private MS Manganyi, Private LRT Mpolokeng, and Private MP Nzukela—died after a fire was believed to have been made inside the container they were using as a guard house. The officers were on duty as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, which targets illegal mining activities.
According to the SANDF, the officers were found inside the container on the morning of July 6, 2024, by the incoming shift. “The SAPS was called in and upon inspection of the scene, all four had died, with their rifles on them and their personal items still with them,” the statement read. The district surgeon confirmed there were no injuries on the deceased. Preliminary findings from the Pretoria FSL Chemistry Unit suggested that carbon monoxide poisoning might have been the cause of death.
Both incidents underscore the critical importance of safety measures when dealing with coal and other potential sources of carbon monoxide, especially in enclosed spaces. Authorities are continuing their investigations to provide clarity and prevent future tragedies.
