Months after a severe electric bike accident, actress Nina Dobrev, 35, has bravely shared her struggles with depression and the challenges she faced during her recovery. The former *Vampire Diaries* star sustained multiple injuries in the accident, which required surgery in June. While the procedure was successful, Dobrev’s journey to recovery has been fraught with difficulties.
In a candid Instagram post, Dobrev expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her healing process. “I have been feeling the support and positive energy,” she wrote, acknowledging the kindness and well-wishes from fans and friends. Despite her attempts to stay positive, the actress admitted to E! News that the recovery process was extremely taxing. “With the pain meds and the physical pain that you’re going through, and not being able to walk, and seeing everybody gallivanting across Europe on Instagram, enjoying the summer while I’m sitting in bed,” she recalled, describing the experience as deeply challenging.
Dobrev confessed that she struggled with depression during this period, stating, “I definitely was in a depression. I had a really hard time.” The physical and emotional toll of her injuries, combined with the contrast of others’ carefree summer vacations, contributed to her feelings of despair.
The actress, who is dating Olympian Shaun White, revealed that the accident has left her with a lingering fear of returning to adventurous activities. “I feel like I have a fear now… I used to be so adventurous and down to do anything. And now, since the injury—maybe it’s because I’m still healing, and it’s a nine-month process. I’m only three and a half months into the nine months,” she shared. Dobrev is still in the process of relearning how to walk and has put off trying activities like snowboarding or dirt biking.
Currently, Dobrev wears a knee brace to aid her recovery and has made efforts to stay active. Recently, she attended the 2024 Paris Olympics with White, marking a significant milestone in her healing journey. Sharing photos from the trip on Instagram, she proudly showcased her knee brace and cane. “I can officially cross ‘my first Olympics’ off the bucket list,” she wrote, adding in French, “Goodbye Paris, see you next time! It was beautiful as always.”
Dobrev expressed that the unwavering support from her partner and her “incredible support system” played a crucial role in helping her overcome her struggles. Her openness about her mental health challenges and recovery journey provides insight into the difficulties faced by those recovering from serious injuries and the importance of a supportive network.
