In a startling development, suspected human remains have been uncovered at the Harare offices of Better Brands, a gold mining and marketing company owned by Mabvuku MP Scott Sakupwanya. The discovery was made during renovations on Churchill Road in Avondale.
According to ZimLive, the alarming find occurred when a construction worker, using an excavator to uproot a tree on the property, uncovered what appeared to be human bones. The police were promptly alerted, and Avondale officers arrived to investigate. Bone samples have been collected and sent to a forensic lab for DNA analysis to determine whether they are indeed human remains. The results of this analysis could take several weeks to complete.
An internal police memo, seen by ZimLive, notes that Sakupwanya recently acquired the premises from a company previously known as Afrihype Nyakatsanga Safari, which has since relocated to South Africa. The history of the property, including any activities that may have taken place there, is now under scrutiny.
The suspected human remains have raised numerous questions about the property’s past. The police are urging anyone with information regarding the property or its former occupants to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Scott Sakupwanya’s Better Brands is a significant player in Zimbabwe’s gold industry, claiming to supply around half of all gold deliveries to the official buyer, Fidelity. In 2023, the company delivered 13 tonnes of gold, representing nearly half of the total 30.1 tonnes sold to Fidelity. The discovery at Sakupwanya’s property casts a shadow over his business and political stature.
Sakupwanya, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF party, has close ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He is also indirectly involved in recent political controversies, including the recall of CCC officials who had won parliamentary seats in the 2023 general elections.
The investigation into the suspected human remains is ongoing, with the authorities working diligently to uncover the identity of the remains and the circumstances surrounding their discovery. This incident has not only raised concerns about the safety and history of the property but has also potentially impacted Sakupwanya’s public image and political career.
