In a devastating accident on the evening of Sunday, eight people were killed instantly when a commuter omnibus collided head-on with a haulage truck at the 135km peg along the Chivhu-Nyazura Road, near Save Bridge.
According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the crash involved a Nissan Vanette carrying 11 passengers and a Shacman truck traveling in opposite directions. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was triggered when the Nissan Vanette struck a grid on the bridge, causing its ball joint to dislodge. This mechanical failure led the vehicle to veer into the path of the oncoming truck, resulting in the fatal collision.
The driver of the Shacman truck fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle and some documents. Efforts to locate him are ongoing.

Their bodies have been transported to Murambinda Mission Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Additionally, four individuals who sustained injuries in the accident were admitted to the same hospital for treatment. Commissioner Nyathi highlighted the critical need for proper vehicle maintenance and the dangers associated with overloaded and poorly maintained vehicles, often referred to as “pirate taxis” or “mishikashika.”
These vehicles frequently flout traffic laws and are known to contribute significantly to road accidents.
