Tragic plane crash claims the life of Zimbabwean pilot

In a devastating turn of events, Captain Fungai Majakwara, a seasoned Zimbabwean pilot and managing director of Nyasa Express, has died in a plane crash in Malawi. The accident occurred on Tuesday when the Cessna C210 aircraft he was piloting went into Lake Malawi. The crash, which took place in Nkhotakota District—approximately 200 kilometers northeast of the Malawian capital, Lilongwe—claimed the lives of Captain Majakwara and one passenger. The sole survivor, 24-year-old Charlotte Lemstra from the Netherlands, was rescued by local fishermen and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital for minor injuries.

The Malawian airline Nyasa Express owned the aircraft en route from Nkhotakota to Liwonde when it crashed about 45 minutes before its scheduled landing. Following intensive search efforts by local authorities and fishermen, the bodies of Captain Majakwara and the deceased passenger were recovered on Wednesday.

Preliminary reports suggest that Captain Majakwara might have lost consciousness during the flight, but the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. This tragic incident occurred in the wake of another fatal aviation accident in Malawi this past June, which resulted in the death of the country’s Vice President and eight other individuals.

Captain Majakwara, who was based in Lilongwe with his family, is survived by his wife and three children. The aviation community in Zimbabwe and Malawi is mourning the loss of a highly respected pilot, known for his expertise and dedication to the field.

This incident highlights the critical need for stringent safety and regulatory measures in aviation. As investigations continue, Zimbabwean and Malawian media have drawn attention to the need for ongoing improvements in aviation safety protocols to prevent such tragedies.
