In a surprising move, the University of Zimbabwe’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, has mandated all lecturers to participate in a campus-wide cleanup campaign this Friday, August 9, 2024. This directive comes in preparation for the SADC Summit public lecture scheduled for August 15, 2024, at the prestigious institution.
In a letter dated August 8, 2024, and distributed to various university offices including Deans and departmental chairpersons, Professor Mapfumo emphasized the importance of the cleanup in ensuring that the campus is presentable for the high-profile event. The letter specifies that all staff members are required to assemble by 08:30 hrs on Friday for an initial address before being assigned their cleaning duties. An attendance register will be maintained, and non-compliance is expected to result in disciplinary actions.
The directive has sparked controversy among faculty members. Some lecturers have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that their contractual obligations do not cover such housekeeping duties. They point out that their roles are primarily focused on teaching and guiding students, and they have voiced concerns about the impact on their health and well-being, especially for those with fragile health conditions.
“It is not within the confines of my contract to do housekeeping duties. I am contracted to facilitate, guide, or teach students according to a prescribed timetable,” one lecturer remarked. “Why issue directives without considering the health concerns of lecturers? Many have fragile health backgrounds yet are highly qualified for teaching roles.”
Despite the pushback, the university administration stands firm on the decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the university’s image and readiness for the upcoming summit. Professor Mapfumo’s directive highlights a commitment to ensuring that the institution meets its obligations to host a successful and dignified event. The cleanup campaign’s implementation will test the university’s ability to balance academic responsibilities with administrative demands, as well as the effectiveness of Professor Mapfumo’s leadership in rallying the academic staff for this essential task.
