ZESA holdings announces extended load-shedding due to Hwange power station issues

Zimbabwe’s national power utility, ZESA Holdings, has announced an extension of load-shedding across the country following a significant decrease in electricity generation at the Hwange Thermal Power Station. In a statement released on the evening of August 24, ZESA Holdings revealed that a technical problem with Unit 8, which has a capacity of 300 MW, at the Hwange facility, has led to a substantial shortfall in electricity supply. The issue has necessitated the implementation of increased load-shedding schedules to manage the imbalance between electricity supply and demand.

“ZESA Holdings would like to inform its valued customers that the national power grid is currently experiencing reduced electricity generation capacity due to a technical challenge that occurred at the Hwange Thermal Power Station’s Unit 8,” the statement read.

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) reported earlier on August 24 that the Hwange Thermal Power Station was generating only 635 MW of electricity, a significant drop from over 1,000 MW before August 21. This reduction in output has exacerbated the power supply crisis, leading to extended load-shedding across the country.

ZESA Holdings assured the public that their technical teams are working diligently to resolve the fault and restore normal electricity supply as quickly as possible. The utility expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and appreciated the patience and understanding of its customers during this challenging period.

The extended load-shedding is expected to impact various sectors and daily activities, and the utility is urging all customers to plan accordingly as they work to address the current power supply issues.
