Citizens Coalition for Change politician Happymore Chidziva was finally arrested on Tuesday and charged with rape. The victim’s lawyer Webster Jiti confirmed his arrest. Chidziva, the legislator for Glenview North and married to the aunt of the alleged victim, is accused of enticing the teenager with gifts before repeatedly raping her. His arrest followed a letter from Jiti to the police on September 20, seeking an update on the case opened late last month.
“Our client is concerned with the delays in the apprehension of the accused person in this matter. Accordingly, we have been instructed to kindly request your good office to apprehend the accused person pending the completion of investigations, as we do at this moment,” Jiti wrote in the letter addressed to the Police Victim Friendly Unit at Harare Central. On Tuesday, Jiti announced that police had confirmed Happymore Chidziva had been arrested. He said Chidziva is expected in court on Wednesday for his initial appearance. Jiti said: “The ZRP has advised me that they have managed to apprehend Chidziva. The matter will go to court on Wednesday for initial remand.”
At the time of writing, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had not confirmed that they had arrested Happymore Chidziva. According to a report by ZimLive, the victim’s family initially filed a missing person report at Budiriro police station, claiming that Chidziva was hiding her. The situation escalated leading to the opening of a rape docket at Harare Central police station.
A family spokesperson claimed that Chidziva was responsible for the minor, who is a cousin of his wife. The spokesperson alleged that Chidziva was involved in a sexual relationship with the girl, supported by evidence from tests at a Harare rape clinic indicating that the minor is sexually active. The girl has been missing for nearly two weeks, with her family stating she was last seen with Chidziva. Sources close to the case revealed that Chidziva had offered to help the girl find a job.
