A 27-year-old Chegutu man, Saul Shezhu, has been arrested for the brutal murder of his friend Nyikadzino Mataruse after a beer-drinking spree last Tuesday evening. The incident has shocked the local community of Jinkstown, Chegutu. According to a witness, Stepmore Mutandavari, who was also a friend of the victim, the group had spent the entire day drinking beer and singing gospel songs. Mutandavari noted that Nyikadzino seemed to have a premonition about his impending death.
Around 10 p.m., after walking ahead of Shezhu and Mutandavari, Nyikadzino was left alone while the two friends continued their journey. Mutandavari later parted ways with Shezhu and Nyikadzino at Nyikadzino’s homestead. It was then that Shezhu allegedly attacked Nyikadzino, ambushing him and slashing his throat with a six-inch knife. The assault was fatal, and Nyikadzino was found dead on the spot.
Local headman Sabhuku Kandira revealed that Shezhu had a disturbing history of violence, including previous attempts to kill his parents, mutilating his father’s donkey, and attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl. Kandira also alleged that Shezhu had bribed police officers to evade arrest for his earlier crimes.
Esteri Gasiya, the mother of the child Shezhu attempted to rape, criticized the police for mishandling her daughter’s case, stating it was distressing for her child to see Shezhu’s continued presence in the community. She called for a life sentence for Shezhu, emphasizing the danger he poses to the community. The body of Nyikadzino was discovered the following morning by a passerby, leading to Shezhu’s arrest. He is currently in custody at Norton Police Station, awaiting further legal proceedings.
