Classroom ceiling collapse injures students at Magwegwe High School

Last Friday, several ‘A’ Level students at Magwegwe High School in Bulawayo were injured when a classroom ceiling collapsed during a lesson. The injured students were promptly taken to Mpilo Central Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged. Mr. Taungana Ndoro, Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, confirmed the incident. While school officials acted quickly to secure medical care for the affected students, concerns have been raised by parents regarding the lack of financial assistance for medication costs post-discharge.

One parent, whose child was among the twelve injured, expressed frustration over the situation. “My son was one of the five students with more serious injuries, and I had to buy pain medication for him after he was discharged. The students sustained bruises when the ceiling collapsed, and some had to be pulled out of the rubble by learners in the next classroom,” the parent said.

Despite a meeting on Tuesday between the headmaster and the School Development Committee (SDC), there was reportedly no discussion of support for medical expenses. The headmaster, Mr. William Ncube, declined to comment on the issue, directing inquiries to Provincial Education Director (PED) Mr. Bernard Mazambane, who was unavailable due to other commitments.

The incident has highlighted urgent concerns about the safety of school infrastructure. Parents are calling for immediate repairs and better oversight to prevent similar accidents in the future, emphasizing the need for a safer learning environment for their children.
